The experience
The tour starts at Materuni Village Office, 13 kilometers from Moshi, where your guide meets you to begin a 40-minute walk to the waterfall. The path cuts through coffee and banana trees on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, and your guide explains the Chagga people, village life, and the plants and animals around you. The waterfall itself is more than 80 meters high, and the pool at its base is deep enough for a swim. Bring swimwear if you want to cool off.
After the waterfall, you move to a local coffee farm to learn how the Chagga grow, dry, roast and process their beans. You'll help grind the coffee by hand, which is traditionally done alongside Chagga songs and dances. Once you've finished, you sit down to drink the coffee you made while looking out over the montane rainforest and, on clear days, toward Kilimanjaro's summit.
Lunch is cooked by local women in the village and eaten there, giving you time to rest after the walk and the farm work. The whole day (waterfall, coffee farm, lunch and the cultural exchange woven through it) takes six to seven hours from start to finish, with private transport handling the drive both ways.
