The experience

The hike starts with pickup from your hotel in Moshi and a one-hour drive to Marangu Gate, where the trail begins. From there, you climb through lush rainforest for 3 to 4 hours to reach Mandara Hut. The vegetation (eucalyptus trees and dense canopy) frames the route, and the wildlife appears along the way: blue velvet monkeys, colobus monkeys and birds you won't see at lower elevations. The air gets noticeably cooler as you gain elevation.

Maundi crater sits on the route, and from its rim you can see across Northern Tanzania and into Kenya. After a packed lunch at or near Mandara Hut, you descend the same trail back to Marangu Gate. The downhill takes less time than the ascent. A guide leads the whole day, and water is provided throughout.
