The experience
Moshi sits at the base of Kilimanjaro, and this trek starts at Marangu Gate, where the mountain's lowest slopes are still thick with ancient forest. The path climbs through emerald rainforest filled with exotic flowers and hidden waterfalls, the greenest part of the mountain and the one where wildlife moves through the canopy above. Your guide points out the rare Black-and-White Colobus monkeys and Blue monkeys that live here, along with bird species and mountain plants most visitors never see because they start higher up. The trail is the most well-maintained on the mountain, built for all ages and fitness levels.
Mandara Hut sits at 2,700 meters, the first base camp of Kilimanjaro. You reach it in the morning, rest there, and eat lunch at the iconic wooden huts while the forest quiets around you. A short walk from the hut takes you to Maundi Crater rim, where the reward is sudden: panoramic views of the snow-capped Kibo Peak and the plains of Kenya stretching into the distance. The descent follows the same path back through the forest to the gate, giving you time to photograph the landscape and absorb what you have covered in a single day.
Private transfer picks you up from your hotel in Moshi and returns you there the same afternoon. Your guide speaks English, Italian, French, German or one of six other languages, and brings the mountain's history to life as you walk. Water and lunch are included. The crew's tips are optional but appreciated. The whole day runs about six and a half hours on the trail.
