The experience

You're picked up from your hotel or airport in Dar es Salaam and driven 6 hours to Mikumi, stopping for lunch in Morogoro town along the way. The park sits on the Mkata Floodplain, a landscape so open and animal-rich that it draws comparisons to the Serengeti. You arrive in late afternoon, settle into your campsite, and head straight out for an evening game drive to catch the animals moving as the light drops. Overnight you stay in the park itself (budget tents, mid-range bandas, or luxury tented accommodation depending on which option you chose), and the sounds of hyena and sometimes lions carry across the camp.

Day two is a full game drive from breakfast through lunch. The Mkata plain and areas like Kisungura and Hippo Dams hold lion, eland, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, elephant and wild dog packs. You move slowly enough to photograph, stop where the animals are, and eat a packed lunch in the field. That night you're back at camp for dinner. On the final morning, a 3-hour game drive lets you catch anything you missed, then you drive back to Dar es Salaam, arriving in the late evening at your hotel or airport.

The jeep has a pop-up roof for unobstructed sightings and photos. Your guide speaks English and can adjust the route based on where animals are moving. All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are included, along with mineral water during drives. Alcoholic drinks are available to purchase. The operator provides the WD safari vehicle, all government park fees, and accommodation as you've chosen it. You arrange your own flights and travel insurance.
