The experience
You're picked up from your hotel in Dar es Salaam early and driven roughly 4 hours through the countryside to Mikumi National Park. The park sits between three mountain ranges (the Uluguru to the northeast, the Rubeho to the northwest and the Lumango to the southeast), and spreads across baobabs, black hardwood trees and grassy plains. On arrival, the game drive starts right away: you'll spend a few hours watching for wildlife before stopping for lunch, then head back out for the afternoon drive until 3pm, when the return journey to your hotel begins.
Mikumi's landscape and year-round animal presence mean sightings are almost guaranteed. Buffaloes, wildebeest, giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, leopards, crocodiles and endangered wild dogs all live here, and a respectable sampling usually shows up within a short time of entering. The game drives let you move through the park at a pace that catches movement and behavior rather than rushing between marked stops.
Bottled water comes with you. Lunch is provided. The full day (drive, game drives, lunch and return) takes roughly 10 hours door to door. A valid passport is required on the day of travel.
