The experience

You depart your Dar es Salaam hotel at 8am and fly to an airstrip inside Selous Game Reserve, arriving by 9:15am. From the runway itself, wildlife appears: giraffes, impalas and other animals graze near the landing strip. The reserve is the wildest in Tanzania: dense thickets give way to open wooded grassland, and the landscape is shaped by lakes and rivers that draw concentrations of animals year-round. Your guide drives a 4x4 jeep through the park for seven to eight hours, covering terrain where you encounter a wide range of antelopes (impala, waterbuck, eland, kudu, dikdik), giraffes, zebras, elephants, crocodiles, hippos, warthogs, hyenas, wild dogs, leopards, lions and hundreds of bird species.

A bush lunch is served during the day. At 4:30pm you're transferred back to the airstrip for the return flight to Dar es Salaam, arriving the same evening. The full day (flight, game drive, lunch and return) fits inside a single departure, and hotel pickup and drop-off bookend the experience.
