The experience

You start before dawn (pickup at 5:30 from your Dar es Salaam hotel or airport), and drive five to six hours to reach Mikumi's entrance gate. The park sprawls across 3,230 square kilometers and is Tanzania's fourth largest, positioned where a paved road cuts through wilderness that stretches almost to the Indian Ocean. Once you arrive, you check into Mikumi Park Cottage to rest and eat lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive that runs until sunset. Dinner is included at the lodge.

Day two starts with a sunrise game drive that continues until around 9 a.m., followed by breakfast. After an hour's drive through the park, you reach a Masai boma: a traditional settlement where you learn how this nomadic tribe lives alongside the wildlife and see a Masai dance. Lunch happens here, then the drive back to Dar es Salaam begins. The return journey takes the same five to six hours as the outbound trip.

A live guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one additional language throughout both days. Soft drinks are included. Alcoholic drinks are available to purchase. Children from age one are welcome, and infants can sit on an adult's lap or use a specialized infant seat if needed.
