The Experience

The first thing I remember is the crunch of black gravel under my shoes as we stepped out near Timanfaya. It was quiet except for the wind—dry, a little salty, carrying that faint sulfur smell you only get around volcanoes. Our guide, Elena, grinned and poked fun at our wide eyes when the ground steamed up from a hole she poured water into. I didn’t expect it to feel so alive underfoot—like the island was still shifting.

Driving north, we passed through Haría—suddenly everything went green, palms everywhere like a surprise after all that lava. Elena told us about César Manrique as we rolled past his sculptures (I tried to pronounce “Monumento al Campesino” right; she laughed but said I was close). The Cueva de los Verdes was cooler than I thought—literally and otherwise. Inside the cave, voices echoed weirdly off the stone walls and there was this earthy dampness that stuck to my skin. At one point they turned off all the lights for a minute—total darkness—and someone let out a nervous giggle. Made me realize how deep we were.

Jameos del Agua felt almost dreamlike: white stone against blue water, sunlight slanting through gaps in the rock ceiling. There were tiny blind crabs in the pool—Elena said they’re unique to this place. We stopped for a quick coffee (strong enough to wake anyone) before heading up to a cliff viewpoint where La Graciosa just floated on the horizon. The air up there tasted different—cleaner maybe? Or maybe it was just being so high above everything else.

We ended with a glass of local Malvasía wine in La Geria, surrounded by these odd little stone circles hugging each vine. The sun had started to dip by then, gold on black earth. Honestly, I still think about that view sometimes when I’m back home staring at my screen. Not every day trip from Lanzarote gives you so many stories packed into one ride—you know?
