The Experience

I didn’t expect the ground to feel so warm under my shoes at Timanfaya — like someone left a heater running just below the surface. Our guide, Marta, dropped a handful of gravel into my palm and grinned: “Volcanoes never really sleep here.” She was right. The bus windows had fogged up from all our chatter as we wound through those black lava fields, but outside it was quiet except for the wind. I still think about that silence.

We stopped at El Golfo next. That green lake looks unreal against the dark sand — almost like someone spilled paint by accident. I tried to get a photo but honestly, you just have to see it. There was this salty smell in the air and some older local men sitting outside a bar, laughing about something I couldn’t catch. After that we drove into La Geria for wine tasting. Those vineyards are wild — little vines huddled inside black stone circles. The wine was dry and earthy; not what I’m used to but somehow perfect after all that sun and dust.
