The experience

The trek starts with a 7.5 km circular walk through the Volcanoes Natural Park, climbing the Rilla Volcano to stand inside its craters and look out across the lavafields that stretch in every direction. You'll see the raw geology up close (the chimneys where gas once escaped, the volcanic tubes that honeycomb the ground), and a local guide explains how the Timanfaya eruptions shaped the island three centuries ago. The walk stays low-difficulty, with an altitude gain of only 30 metres, so the focus stays on what you're standing in rather than the effort to get there.

Walking sticks and a rain jacket are provided, and snacks keep you going along the way. The guide is a local who knows the paths that don't appear in guidebooks: the difference between a standard park loop and the version locals actually walk.
