You're picked up from your hotel and driven about 40 minutes north to Cueva de los Verdes, a volcanic cave carved through the Malpaís de la Corona lava field. The guide walks you through the tunnel—a formation of extraordinary geological and scenic value—and explains how it formed and what makes it one of the island's hidden wonders. From there it's a 15-minute bus ride to Jameos del Agua, the first art and tourism centre César Manrique created when he arrived on the island. Inaugurated in 1968, he transformed the space inside a volcanic tunnel into a work of art that represents his ideology: artistic creation in harmony with the environment and nature. You walk through the site without waiting in line.

After Jameos, the bus climbs to a clifftop 500 metres above sea level with a panoramic view of Lanzarote and La Graciosa island. Then you drive about 15 minutes through Haría, the valley of a thousand palm trees, one of the best palm groves in the Canary Islands—green fields and white architecture appearing suddenly out of the pure geology of the island. The final stop is the Monument to the Peasant near San Bartolomé, a construction more than 15 metres high that Manrique created with the master Jesús Soto from old water tanks, iron and concrete. It has become one of the island's iconic symbols.
