The Experience

“If you cannae pronounce Sligachan, just call it ‘the bridge with the magic water’,” our guide Alasdair grinned as he adjusted his kilt and pointed out the low mist curling over the hills. We’d barely left Inverness when he started weaving stories—some true, some probably not—and I realized this wasn’t going to be one of those silent, head-down bus rides. The road twisted through Glenshiel, where he made us imagine Spanish soldiers in tartan, rain spitting lightly on the windows. I pressed my forehead to the glass just to watch everything blur by—ferns, sheep, stone walls. It smelled faintly like wet grass and old wool inside the van.

Eilean Donan Castle looked almost unreal sitting at the intersection of three sea lochs. We got out for photos (and for me to stretch my legs—I’m not built for long van rides). Inside, there’s something about old Scottish castles that makes you whisper without meaning to. Our group shuffled past ancient tapestries and a suit of armor that looked like it could swallow me whole. Back outside, Alasdair told us about all the films shot here; I tried to picture myself as an extra but mostly just felt small in a good way.

The drive onto the Isle of Skye itself felt like crossing into another world—one minute you’re on mainland Scotland, then suddenly everything’s sharper: cliffs drop straight into blue water, clouds hang lower. Lunch in Portree was quick but cozy; I grabbed a sandwich from a tiny shop where the woman behind the counter had an accent thicker than my coffee. Pastel houses lined up along the harbor like someone spilled paint on purpose.

We picked Option 1 for our day trip—hiking to the Old Man of Storr. The climb was muddy (bring waterproof shoes!) but worth every squelch. At one point I stopped just to catch my breath and realized how quiet it was except for wind whistling through rocks. Alasdair pointed out which bits were lava and which were “just stubborn Scottish stone.” When we finally reached that thumb-shaped pillar, someone in our group touched it and closed their eyes like they were making a wish. I didn’t expect to feel anything special but… I kind of did.
