The experience
You're picked up from your Inverness accommodation and driven west into the Highlands in an air-conditioned Land Rover or minibus with a professional kilted guide. The route follows the Great Glen, a natural valley carved through the mountains, and the day hinges on one moment: watching the Jacobite Steam Train cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct, the bridge that doubled as the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films. Glenfinnan itself sits amid the scenery where the 1745 Jacobite uprising began, and the viaduct is the most photographed railway bridge in Scotland.
After Glenfinnan, the tour stops in Fort William for lunch. You choose from cafes and shops in the town, all shadowed by Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain. On the return leg, you walk along the lock gates of the Caledonian Canal at Fort Augustus, built by Thomas Telford in the 19th century, and look out across the full length of Loch Ness from the canal mouth. A brief stop at Urquhart Castle gives you a photo opportunity and views over the loch before the drive back to Inverness.
The guide is with you the whole time and speaks English. The vehicle is private to your group (you're not sharing with strangers), and pickup and drop-off from your accommodation in Inverness or en route are included. The tour operates in all weather, so pack layers and waterproofs. It's not recommended for children under six because of the length.
