Summary

History and legends along Loch Ness and Highland castles

You’ll travel from Inverness with a local guide through misty Loch Ness views and castle ruins at Urquhart, taste whisky at Glen Ord Distillery, feel history at Culloden Battlefield, and wander ancient stones at Clava Cairns before exploring Cawdor Castle’s gardens. Expect stories, laughter, quiet moments—and maybe something you didn’t expect will stay with you after.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit it: I was way too excited about seeing Loch Ness. Maybe it’s silly, but that whole monster legend has been stuck in my head since I was a kid. Our guide — Jamie, who wore this faded tartan scarf and seemed to know every twist of Highland history — picked us up right outside our B&B in Inverness. The city was just waking up, coffee smells drifting from a bakery by the river. Jamie pointed out St. Andrew’s Cathedral as we drove past, telling us how the River Ness actually gave Inverness its name (not the loch — who knew?).

The drive out to Loch Ness felt like slipping into another world. Mist hung over the water and Urquhart Castle appeared through it — all jagged stone against that deep blue-black loch. I tried to imagine what it must’ve been like defending that place centuries ago; honestly, it’s hard not to get swept up in the drama of it all. We wandered through the ruins while Jamie shared stories about Picts and Jacobites (I’m still not sure I got all the clans straight). There was this moment where everything went quiet except for some distant gulls — just me, damp grass underfoot, and those ancient stones.

Afterwards we stopped at Beauly Priory — peaceful in a different way. The air smelled like moss and old earth. Then Glen Ord Distillery: warm malty scents everywhere, even before we tasted anything. The tour there was quick but honest; they didn’t dress things up too much, just showed us how whisky’s made here on the Black Isle. I tried a sip (it burned a little), but somehow that felt right for Scotland.

Culloden Battlefield hit me harder than expected. It’s just open land now but Jamie walked us along the lines where everything happened in 1746 — he got quiet for a bit too. There are still wildflowers growing between the stones marking clan graves; I kept thinking about how fast things can change for people. Clava Cairns was next: ancient burial stones tucked into woods that smelled sharp with pine needles after rain. A couple from Glasgow asked if I’d seen Outlander (I haven’t), apparently this spot is famous because of it.

We finished at Cawdor Castle which looked almost too perfect to be real — turrets poking above gardens full of roses and bees buzzing everywhere. My feet were tired by then but I didn’t really want it to end yet. Driving back into Inverness as evening crept in, I realized I’d barely checked my phone all day. That view over Loch Ness is still stuck in my mind somewhere — maybe that’s what people mean when they say a place lingers with you.
