The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the cold stone of Urquhart Castle under my hand—still damp from last night’s rain. We’d barely left Inverness when our guide, Ewan, pulled over along Loch Ness for a quick photo stop. The water looked almost black in the morning light. Lunch in Mallaig was a surprise—I didn’t think much about seafood until I tried smoked haddock chowder at a tiny place near the harbor. You could hear gulls fighting over scraps outside and smell salt everywhere. Some folks wandered off to find chips or just stare at the boats bobbing around; I kind of wanted to stay longer but we had to keep moving. On the way back east we stopped at Fort Augustus for tea and more views of Loch Ness (still no monster), then again at this waterfall called Falls of Foyers. It’s loud—like you can feel it thumping in your chest if you get close enough.

The last bit was Dores Beach—windy and wide open, with pebbles that crunch under your boots. I stood there trying to see all the way down Loch Ness (I couldn’t), thinking about how many people must have done exactly this before me. The ride back to Inverness felt quiet; everyone sort of lost in their own thoughts or dozing against the window. I still think about that moment at Glenfinnan sometimes—the train whistle echoing between hills—and wonder if it really happened or if I dreamed it on some long Scottish road.
