The experience

Portree is your base, and the route loops the island's north and west, crossing the Skye Bridge and passing through the island's main town before heading to the dramatic basalt cliffs of Kilt Rock and the Mealt Waterfall. The Quiraing (a vast landslip landscape at the island's north) is a photo stop where the Table was once used for shinty matches. Between the famous spots sit the quieter finds: a museum of dinosaur fossils collected since 1976 in a family home, a hamlet of restored black houses showing 1800s island life, and the Flora MacDonald Memorial.

Your driver-guide handles the route and can shift stops if something catches your interest or the weather changes. Loch Ness appears early with a chance to photograph Urquhart Castle ruins, and Eilean Donan Castle gets time for entry and photos. A lunch stop is optional and can be arranged at a location of your choice. If you want to visit Talisker, the island's only whisky distillery, that needs to be pre-booked because of limited tour availability during building works.
