The experience

The day starts with a drive west toward Loch Ness, where you pass Urquhart Castle (a 13th-century stronghold that guarded the Great Glen) before reaching Eilean Donan Castle. Perched on a small island where three sea lochs meet, this restored 13th-century fortress is one of Scotland's most photographed landmarks, and you'll have a stop to capture it. The castle marks the threshold: once you cross the Skye Bridge, the landscape shifts into the raw geology of the Trotternish Ridge.

The Trotternish peninsula is where the day's walking happens. You'll stand at the Old Man of Storr, a towering pinnacle of jagged rock that rises from the northern slopes and dominates the surrounding landscape for miles. The Quiraing, a dramatic landslip of cliffs, pinnacles and grassy slopes, comes next: a maze of rock formations and hidden plateaus that feels otherworldly whether it's cloaked in mist or lit by clear light.
