The Experience

I’ll be honest — I’d always wondered if the Isle of Skye could really live up to all those moody photos. The drive out from Inverness started quietly, just me and our guide (I think his name was Calum?) swapping stories about Highland weather and sheep that apparently know how to block roads better than any traffic light. We stopped at Eilean Donan Castle first — it’s perched right where three sea lochs meet, and even though I’d seen it on postcards, in person it felt older somehow. The air smelled faintly salty and cold, like wet stone. Calum told us a bit about the clan history, but honestly I was just staring at the reflections in the water for most of it.

Crossing over the Skye Bridge felt like slipping into another world — suddenly there were these jagged silhouettes of the Cuillin mountains off in the distance, half-covered by low clouds. We pulled over at Sligachan for photos (the old bridge is just sitting there looking like something out of a storybook), then rolled into Portree for lunch. Portree’s harbor is all pastel houses and fishing boats; I grabbed a sandwich from a tiny café while watching a couple of locals argue good-naturedly about football scores. Not exactly glamorous, but it made me feel like I’d actually landed somewhere real.

The Old Man of Storr was next — you can see that rock spire miles before you get close. Calum pointed out where some movie scenes were filmed (he seemed proud of that), but what stuck with me was how quiet everything got when we stepped out at the viewpoint. Just wind, sheep somewhere far off, and this weird sense that time had slowed down for a minute or two. Kilt Rock came after — apparently named because the cliffs look pleated like tartan? I still don’t really see it but maybe my imagination’s broken.

We finished up at Quiraing, which honestly looked like another planet — green ridges folding over each other under shifting clouds. The road up there is wild; Calum said sometimes they can’t make it in winter if the weather turns bad. On our way back toward Inverness we stopped at this candle shop for a bathroom break (and yes, I bought one that smells like peat smoke). It’s funny what sticks with you after a day like this — not just the big views but little moments: mist on your jacket, someone laughing at your attempt to pronounce “Sligachan,” or just sitting quietly watching rain move across a hillside.
