The Experience

“You’ll never guess what’s around this bend,” our guide Callum grinned as we rattled along that single-track road past Beinn Eighe. He was right—one minute it’s all pine needles underfoot and the next you’re staring at Loch Maree, so still it almost felt rude to talk. The air smelled like wet stone and woodsmoke, and I swear I heard a raven somewhere up in those pines. We’d left Inverness early (pickup was simple—just outside the cathedral), but somehow it already felt like another world.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a day trip from Inverness. Sheildaig was our first proper stop—a tiny place with a pub where someone’s dog wandered in for a biscuit. We grabbed coffee and watched clouds snag on the hills before tackling the twisty road to Applecross. Honestly, if you get carsick, maybe don’t sit at the back (learned that the hard way). But wow—the views over the water were worth every hairpin turn. Lunch in Applecross meant seafood so fresh you could taste the salt air; Li laughed when I tried to say “langoustine” in Gaelic—no idea if I got close.

After that came Eilean Donan Castle, perched out on its own little island at Loch Duich. The bridge looked straight out of some old storybook. You can go inside if you want (tickets are easy to grab from Callum), or just stare at it from the visitor centre café with tea in hand—which is what I did while rain started up again. On the way back toward Inverness we passed those Five Sisters of Kintail peaks, all moody and half-hidden by mist. It’s funny how quiet everyone got then; maybe just tired or maybe letting it all sink in.
