The Experience

I didn’t expect the silence to hit so hard when we first left Doha behind. One minute there’s city noise, then suddenly just wind and the crunch of tires over sand. Our driver, Khaled, grinned and said something about “Qatar’s rollercoaster”—I laughed but honestly, he wasn’t kidding. Dune bashing in a Land Cruiser feels like your stomach is on a trampoline. At one point I caught myself gripping the seat tighter than I’d admit.

We stopped by a camp where the smell of cardamom coffee drifted out before I even saw the tent. A couple of camels blinked at us lazily—one made this low grumbling noise that sounded weirdly like my uncle’s old dog. I tried to say hello (no idea if it worked). Khaled poured tiny cups of coffee and handed around dates, sticky sweet against all that dry air. He pointed out the direction of Saudi Arabia across the water—hard to believe how close it looked from the edge of the Inland Sea.

The sandboarding part was hilarious—I fell twice before figuring out how to balance, and my shoes filled up with sand instantly. There was this little kid from another group who cheered every time someone wiped out, which made everyone laugh harder. The light kept changing—sometimes golden, sometimes almost white—and for a second everything felt quiet except for distant voices and that dry breeze off the dunes.

I still think about that moment standing by the water, shoes in hand, salt on my lips from splashing around. On the drive back to Doha I realized I’d barely checked my phone all day—maybe that’s what stuck with me most.
