The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Doha hotel in an air-conditioned Land Cruiser. Once you reach the desert, you get behind the handlebars of a quad bike and ride across the sand dunes yourself, not watching someone else drive. The guide leads the way on the dunes, and you follow the route at your own pace through the landscape where falcons hunt and Arabian camels graze.
Between ATV runs, you try sandboarding down the dunes and wade into the inland sea, a shallow body of water that sits where the desert meets the shore. The contrast is the point: you're swimming in saltwater surrounded by sand. Back at the desert camp, you drink Arabic coffee and can add a camel ride as an extra if you want it. The whole experience runs about 4 hours, so the day doesn't stretch into evening heat.
The guide speaks English and handles the route and timing, so you show up and ride: no navigation, no planning the stops. Children from age 1 can come along, though the quad bike itself is the main event for anyone old enough to hold on and steer.
