The Experience

We jolted forward as our driver, Khalid, grinned in the rearview mirror—he seemed to love every bump more than we did. The 4x4’s tires hissed over the sand just outside Doha, then suddenly we were climbing a dune so steep my stomach dropped. I actually squealed (not proud). The desert was strangely quiet between engine bursts—just wind and the soft scrape of sand against metal. Khalid pointed out tracks from a fox (I think?) before gunning it again. Dune bashing is not for the faint-hearted, but honestly, that’s half the fun.

Later we stopped where the dunes melted into what they call the Inland Sea—water right up against all that endless beige. A few camels waited nearby with their keepers; I tried not to look nervous getting on mine. The camel’s fur was coarse and dusty under my hand. My guide taught me “yalla” to get him moving (Li laughed when I tried to say it). The slow sway was almost hypnotic after all that adrenaline earlier. Somewhere behind us someone whooped from an ATV bike—those things are loud but looked like a blast.

I gave sandboarding a shot next. Let’s just say: standing up is harder than it looks. Sand got everywhere, even in my teeth somehow, but I still think about that first slide down—the light was gold on everything and for a second it felt like time paused. We ended with sweet tea poured from a battered pot, sitting cross-legged in the cooling shade as dusk crept in. There was something grounding about it after all that chaos. I didn’t expect to feel so calm out there.
