The Experience

The tour opens in Piñones, a coastal strip known for chinchorreo: the Puerto Rican tradition of moving between food stalls sampling small plates. You'll taste local fried delicacies (one portion included) that trace back to African culinary traditions brought by enslaved ancestors centuries ago. From there, the route moves to Loíza, a municipality with some of the strongest African cultural roots in the Western Hemisphere, with direct ancestry to the Yoruba people of West Africa.

In Loíza, you'll visit Cueva María de la Cruz, a limestone cavern where archaeologists found remains of the Arcaico, Puerto Rico's earliest known inhabitants, during a 1948 expedition. The cave itself is a formation of limestone and mineral deposits. After the cave, a local barbecue lunch is available if you want it (separate charge, picnic style). Then comes the hike: an easy walk through El Yunque National Forest to a river bath sacred to the Taíno Indians. The forest is the only tropical rainforest in the USDA National Forest system, with 26 animal species found nowhere else on the island. The river water is clear enough to see eels, chopa fish, and river shrimp. Snorkeling gear is provided if you want to use it in the water.

The day ends at Luquillo Beach, a mile-long stretch of golden sand backed by coconut palms and ranked among the world's top 30 beaches. The water stays warm and calm year-round. Just inland from the sand sits the Luquillo Kiosks: about 60 family-owned stalls selling fresh oysters, local seafood, drinks, and souvenirs. On the drive back toward the metropolitan area, you'll pass through Canovanas, historically known as "The Indians' Cradle" for its role in early colonial history and now home to Puerto Rico's only horse racing track. A rum cocktail made with Puerto Rican rum rounds out the experience.
