The Experience

Pickup happens between 8 and 10 a.m. from your San Juan hotel, and you'll receive a text the day before with your exact time. The drive takes you through El Yunque National Forest, passing Rio Mameyes, Puente Roto and the Angelito Trail Head before reaching a private access point. From there, a moderate 15- to 20-minute walk through the rainforest canopy brings you to Las Paylas, a river with two waterslides, a hidden waterfall, a natural pool and a cave. The guide stays with the group; you choose whether to slide, swim or explore at your own pace.

After the rainforest, you head to Los Kioskos—a two-minute walk from Luquillo Beach—where you have two hours to eat, drink and shop. The strip is lined with restaurants serving fresh seafood, fritters and tropical cocktails, and souvenir stalls. Bring cash or a card; meals and drinks are on you. Then it's back to San Juan by late afternoon, depending on traffic and where you started.

Cotton socks are required for the rainforest (worn with water shoes or hiking boots) because they grip mossy rocks better than bare feet. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory; flip-flops are not allowed on the trail. The guide may deny participation if you cannot safely walk uneven, slippery surfaces, and the tour operates rain or shine—weather may change the route. No large luggage, no alcohol on the bus, and only a small carry-on bag per person.
