What if the waterfall you find is the one nobody else knows about?

You hike for roughly an hour through a remote section of El Yunque that most visitors never reach, crossing the Espiritu Santo River and stopping at natural pools before arriving at a waterfall with a deep basin for swimming or jumping. The small-group format and local guide's knowledge of this specific area mean you're unlikely to encounter crowds. Pickup from Condado is included, as is entry to the national forest, a life vest, water and snacks — you just need to show up fit enough to handle the terrain.

5h

Step-by-step itinerary

Hike to remote El Yunque waterfall

  • Meet in Condado
  • Drive to El Yunque Rainforest
  • Arrive at pristine forest
  • Follow Espiritu Santo River
  • Stop at natural swimming pools
  • Reach waterfall and large pool

The Experience

You meet in Condado early, then spend an hour driving into the island's interior toward El Yunque National Forest. The road itself is the first thing that gets you — the landscape shifts from city to pure rainforest, and by the time you arrive at the trailhead, you're already somewhere else entirely. Your group stays small, never more than a handful of people in one vehicle, which means you're not following the same path as the 14-person buses heading to the popular spots.

The hike follows the Espiritu Santo River for about an hour, and this is where the day becomes something you didn't quite expect. You're moving through a part of El Yunque that sees almost no foot traffic — the guide knows it because they're one of the only operators licensed to work this area. Along the way there are natural swimming pools where you can stop, the water so clear you can see the riverbed. The physical demand is real; you need good cardiovascular fitness and the ability to move over uneven ground, sometimes in water. But the payoff is that when you reach the waterfall at the end, you're standing in front of it almost alone, with maybe one or two other people in the entire area instead of dozens lined up for photos.

The waterfall drops into a large pool, and if you're comfortable with it, you can jump from the rocks. Life vests are provided, along with bottled water and snacks. Your local guide carries the knowledge of the rainforest's history and ecology, and they're talking as you walk — not reciting a script, but pointing out what lives here and what the land has seen. The drive back gives you time to sit with what you've just done, the air conditioning a small mercy after moving through humidity and river water.

What’s included

Your day includes pickup from Condado, entry to El Yunque National Forest, a local guide who knows this specific remote area, a life vest, bottled water, snacks, and transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle for the drive to and from the rainforest.

Top questions

How long is the actual hike?

About one hour following the river, plus the drive to and from Condado (roughly one hour each way).

Can I do this if I'm not in great shape?

No. The tour requires high physical fitness, good cardiovascular health, and the ability to move over uneven, sometimes wet terrain. It's not recommended for people with mobility issues, recent injuries, or poor cardiovascular condition.

Is this the same as the El Yunque "slides" tour?

No. This tour specifically avoids the popular slides area and goes to a remote, less-visited part of the forest instead.

What's included in the price?

Pickup from Condado, entry to El Yunque National Forest, a local guide, life vest, bottled water, snacks, and transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle.

Will there be other tourists on the trail?

Very unlikely. The guide operates in an area that few other tours access, so you'll almost certainly be alone or with only your own group.

Can I jump off the waterfall?

Yes, if you're comfortable doing so. Life vests are provided and the pool is large enough for it.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a change of clothes, water shoes or sandals that can get wet, and sunscreen. The guide provides water and snacks.

Is this tour safe?

It's designed for people in good physical condition who are comfortable with river crossings and uneven terrain. The guide is trained and provides safety equipment like life vests.
