The Experience

You drive your own rental car to El Yunque National Forest and meet the guide at the trailhead—no shuttle, no waiting for a van. From there, an interpretive hike winds through the 29,000-acre rainforest on natural trails lined with flora and fauna, with river wading and rock climbs built into the route. The guide is a certified lifeguard with CPR and first aid training, so the physical demands are managed and the water activities are supervised.

The hidden segment of the forest where the group stops is the working part of the day: natural pools fed by waterfalls, a rope swing anchored to a tree, rock formations high enough to jump from, and the natural waterslide itself—a smooth stone channel carved by water flow where you slide into the river below. Between the swimming and climbing, there's time to sit by the cascading water, eat fresh local fruit and let the sound of the forest settle around you. The guide photographs the whole thing and sends the images afterward.

The group stays under 30 people, which the operator notes is less than half the size of many other El Yunque tours. The hike takes four hours total, though Saturday departures run about an hour longer and steeper than the rest of the week. The terrain is uneven, slippery and muddy—not a boardwalk—so you need moderate to strenuous fitness, good knees and the ability to climb large rocks and steep inclines. Minimum age is 8; maximum weight is 240 lbs.
