The Experience

The van leaves San Juan heading east toward El Yunque, and within an hour you're pulling into Las Paylas — a pocket of the rainforest most tourists never find. The Mameyes River has carved natural slides into the rock face, pools that sit between them, and a small cave tucked into the bank. Your guide points out where people cliff dive (optional, and genuinely steep) and where you can wade in if you'd rather just float and watch. The water is cold enough to wake you up, and the sound of the falls drowns out everything else. You spend maybe two hours here, moving between the slides and the pools at your own pace — nobody's rushing you through it.

After you dry off, the afternoon splits.
