Step-by-step itinerary

Explore El Yunque and Luquillo Beach

  • Climb Yokahú Tower for views
  • Visit La Coca Falls
  • Relax at Mameyes River
  • Eat at Luquillo Beach Kiosks

The experience

The tour starts at Yokahú Tower, a 69-foot observation structure built in 1963 that sits inside El Yunque National Forest. A short spiral staircase climb gets you to the top, where you stand in a 360-degree view of the lush rainforest canopy, rolling hills, and on clear days the distant coastline. La Coca Falls comes next: an 85-foot cascade dropping into a pool surrounded by dense green, one of the most photographed waterfalls in the forest. Both stops are designed for photos and brief pauses rather than long hikes.

The Mameyes River is where you spend time in the water. The river runs clear and calm through the heart of the forest, and swimming is allowed when weather permits. This is not a guided swim or a structured activity. You wade, cool off, and soak in the sound of the rainforest around you. The river stop gives you a chance to connect with the water itself rather than just look at it from a distance.

The tour ends at Luquillo Beach Kiosks, a row of over 60 small food stalls steps from the beach. You can order mofongo, pinchos, empanadillas, fresh seafood, tropical drinks or international food. This is where locals eat, not a tourist restaurant. The kiosks have a laid-back atmosphere and let you taste Puerto Rican flavors before heading back. The whole day runs six hours and includes entry to El Yunque, the air-conditioned vehicle, and a guide who speaks English or Spanish.

What is Yokahú Tower and why is it worth the climb?

Yokahú Tower is a 69-foot observation tower built in 1963 inside El Yunque National Forest. The short spiral staircase climb reaches the top, where you get a 360-degree view of the rainforest canopy, rolling hills, and the distant coastline on clear days. It's the main reason to bring a camera on this tour.

Can I actually swim in the Mameyes River, or just look at it?

You can swim in the Mameyes River when weather permits. The water is clear and calm, and swimming is allowed as part of the tour. You must be able to swim to participate, and the river is where you spend time cooling off rather than just passing by.

How long is the whole tour, and what fitness level do I need?

The tour runs six hours total. You need at least moderate physical fitness to participate. The climbs are short (Yokahú Tower's spiral staircase and the walk to La Coca Falls), but the tour also includes time in the river, so you must be able to swim.
