The experience
The day starts with pickup from your hotel and a drive to El Yunque National Forest, where you walk a nature path through the rainforest to reach a river stream. The terrain is uneven and wet in places, so wear shoes you don't mind getting soaked. You'll pass La Coca Falls, a 85-foot waterfall at 1,476 feet elevation, and have the option to swim if weather allows. Bring a towel and swimsuit. The guide gives live commentary on the flora and Puerto Rican heritage as you move through the forest.
By mid-afternoon you reach Luquillo Beach, where you have two hours to eat at the kiosks (small open-air restaurants with local food), swim, or rest before the kayaking begins. At 6pm the group heads to Parque Pasivo Las Croabas in Fajardo, where the bioluminescent bay tour launches. You paddle a kayak for an hour and a half through Laguna Grande and the mangrove forest. The water contains dinoflagellates that glow when disturbed: each paddle stroke, each hand dipped in the water, leaves a trail of blue-green light. The intensity depends on weather and water conditions, so some nights are brighter than others. All kayaking equipment is provided.
The tour runs about ten hours total from pickup to return. You need to be comfortable in water and prepared to get wet from the waist down. A weight limit of 240 pounds per person applies, and swimmers should have at least moderate fitness. Children as young as six can join. The guide will ask you to sign a waiver before the kayaking portion begins.

Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (6 to 11 years). Children under 6 can't be included in the booking.

What is the bioluminescent bay and why does the water glow?
Laguna Grande is a shallow lagoon in a mangrove reserve where dinoflagellates, tiny organisms, live in the water. When you move through the water or disturb it with your paddle or hands, the organisms emit a blue-green light as a defense response. The glow is real and visible, though brightness varies with weather and water conditions on any given night.
Do I need kayaking experience to paddle in the bioluminescent bay?
No experience is required. The tour provides all equipment and the guide leads the group through the mangrove forest and lagoon. You do need to be able to swim and comfortable being on the water, and you'll get wet from the waist down, so come prepared for that.
What happens at El Yunque and is swimming included?
You walk a guided nature path through El Yunque National Forest to a river stream, passing La Coca Falls and seeing four types of forest ecosystem. Swimming in the river is available if weather permits, so bring a swimsuit and towel. The terrain is wet and uneven, so wear sturdy shoes.
How much time do I have at Luquillo Beach?
You have two hours at Luquillo Beach from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. The beach has many kiosks and restaurants where you can buy lunch and drinks, and you can swim or relax on the sand before heading to the bioluminescent bay tour at 6pm.
What should I bring and what does the tour provide?
Bring a towel, swimsuit, bug repellent, and shoes suitable for wet terrain. The tour provides all kayaking equipment, roundtrip transportation from your hotel, and a guide who speaks English and Spanish. Meals are not included, but you can buy food at the Luquillo kiosks during your beach stop.
