A 1.5-mile rainforest hike that ends at a natural waterslide and a cliff jump

You hike a short, muddy trail through El Yunque rainforest to a waterfall with natural slides and a cliff jump, spend an hour or two swimming and playing in the pools, then stop at Luquillo Beach to eat at one of the beachfront kiosks before returning to your hotel. The group stays under six people, pickup and transport are included, and the early start keeps the trails quieter than afternoon tours.

The Experience

The pickup window opens at 7am, and that early start is the whole point. Your guide meets you at your hotel or rental in San Juan, Carolina, Luquillo or Fajardo and drives straight to El Yunque National Forest while the trails are still quiet. Bigger tour companies don't roll out until later, which means you'll walk through muddy clay paths with maybe five other people instead of fifty. The hike itself is short—1.5 miles total, about thirty minutes to the first bathing area—but the rainforest is dense enough that you feel like you've gone somewhere.

Las Tinajas Falls is where the day opens up. The water pools are clear enough to see the bottom, and there's a natural waterslide carved into the rock where people take turns sliding into deeper water. If you want to jump, there's a thirty-foot cliff on the far side. Your guide carries a life jacket and first aid kit, and he'll talk about Taíno history and the plants growing around you while you're deciding whether to jump or just float. You get one to two hours here, which is enough time to swim, rope-swing, slide and sit on the rocks without feeling rushed. By 1 or 2pm, everyone heads back down the trail.

Luquillo Beach is the last stop, and it's where you eat. The beach has about twenty-five kiosks lined up along the sand, all of them serving Puerto Rican food—mofongo, alcapurrias, fresh fish, mojitos, piña coladas. Lunch isn't included in the tour price, so you pay for what you order, but the setting is hard to beat. You arrive around 2 or 3pm and usually leave by 4 or 5pm, which gives you time to eat, swim in the ocean if you want, and let the day settle before your guide drives you back to your accommodation.
