The experience
I never thought I’d be sliding down a rock in the middle of El Yunque until our guide, Carlos, grinned and just said “trust me.” We’d started out from San Juan in this spotless van (good A/C, which matters more than you think), and by the time we hit the edge of the rainforest, it was all mist and green everywhere. There’s this moment when you step onto the trail and the air changes: thicker, like you can almost taste the leaves. I kept hearing coquí frogs even though it was morning. Carlos pointed out a tree snail: tiny thing, but he seemed genuinely excited about it.
The hike isn’t long (maybe 25 minutes?), but I did slip once on a root: don’t wear your worst shoes. When we reached the river, I could hear laughter echoing off the rocks before I saw anyone. The water was colder than I expected. First slide looked easy until I sat down. Then my heart did that weird skip thing. But honestly? It was pure fun. I ended up going twice. Some folks jumped from a cliff (not required), others just floated around or tried the rope swing. Carlos took pictures for us. He joked about catching my “scream face” on camera.
Afterwards, we were all starving and wet but happy. The van took us to Luquillo kiosks where everything smelled like fried plantains and garlic. I ordered mofongo because Carlos said it’s non-negotiable if you’re here (he wasn’t wrong). Sitting there with soggy shorts and salty skin, eating hot food while everyone swapped stories. It felt like real travel to me, not just ticking off sights. Still think about that first cold splash under the waterfall sometimes.
