The Experience

I never thought I’d be sliding down a rock in the middle of El Yunque until our guide, Carlos, grinned and just said “trust me.” We’d started out from San Juan in this spotless van—good A/C, which matters more than you think—and by the time we hit the edge of the rainforest, it was all mist and green everywhere. There’s this moment when you step onto the trail and the air changes: thicker, like you can almost taste the leaves. I kept hearing coquí frogs even though it was morning. Carlos pointed out a tree snail—tiny thing, but he seemed genuinely excited about it.

The hike isn’t long (maybe 25 minutes?), but I did slip once on a root—don’t wear your worst shoes. When we reached the river, I could hear laughter echoing off the rocks before I saw anyone. The water was colder than I expected. First slide looked easy until I sat down; then my heart did that weird skip thing. But honestly? It was pure fun—I ended up going twice.
