The Experience

The tour starts with pickup at your hotel, then heads east along the coastal road through Loíza before entering El Yunque. Your guide leads you through the rainforest foothills, pointing out the landscape as you walk. You'll pass Yokah Tower, a 69-foot observation point built in the early 1960s where clear days show the Virgin Islands, the coastline and four distinct forest zones — Colorado, Tabonuco, Palm and Cloud Forest — layered up the mountainside.

The walk takes you to La Coca Falls, an 85-foot cascade dropping into a rock basin that's a natural photo stop, and then to Puente Roto (Broken Bridge) on the Rio Mameyes, a recreation site along a river Congress designated as Wild and Scenic. This is where you swim in the river water that originates at the mountain's peak. The river creates a wide pool for wading and swimming; weather conditions determine whether the water is safe that day. Your guide provides live interpretation of the ecosystem and Puerto Rican heritage throughout the morning.

After the rainforest, you return to the bus and travel to Luquillo Beach, where you have two hours to swim, eat at the beachside kiosks or simply rest on the sand before the drive back to your hotel. The whole tour runs about six hours from pickup to return.
