The experience

Hotel pickup happens between 7:45 and 8:00 in the morning from central Puno, then you board a motor boat where a local musician greets you with Andean music before the guide and captain brief you on the day. The first stop is the Uros floating islands, where the Aymara-speaking residents have built their homes entirely from totora reeds that grow on the lake: the same plants that feed them and hold the islands together. You'll see how the islanders construct and maintain these structures, and you can buy handicrafts or get your passport stamped as a souvenir. An optional traditional reed boat ride costs 10 Soles extra.

From Uros, the boat continues to Amantani Island, where a local family welcomes you to their home for the night in a private room. They serve lunch, a freshly cooked authentic Peruvian meal, and you have free time to rest or walk the cobblestone streets. In the evening, your guide leads an uphill walk to two ancient Incan temples, Pachatata and Pachamama, which overlook the entire lake and offer views of the sunset. After returning to the house for dinner, your host helps you dress in traditional attire and walks you to the community hall for a folkloric music event where young islanders play live Andean music and visitors dance.

Day two begins with breakfast with the family, then a ferry to Taquile Island, home to 2,000 Quechua residents known worldwide for their fine textiles and knitted handicrafts: notably the iconic chuyo hats. Unlike most weaving traditions, the men of Taquile do the knitting, a craft boys learn from age eight. You'll walk the island and see the weavers and knitters at work. Lunch at a local restaurant is not included and costs 20 Soles. After eating, you board the boat back to Puno, where the guide transfers you to your hotel in the historic centre.
