The experience

Uros Floating Islands come first: a 25-minute boat ride from Puno takes you to these man-made islands of totora reed where the Aymara-speaking community lives. Your guide teaches you words in their language before the head of the community shows how they build and maintain the islands. You have free time to walk around, and locals offer optional reed boat rides (paid separately). The real anchor of the tour is Amantani Island, where you stay the night in a private room in a family home and eat meals cooked by your host.

On Amantani, after lunch you have time to rest or explore the cobblestone streets before an uphill walk to Pachatata and Pachamama: two ancient Incan temples that sit above the island. The sunset from the summit frames Lake Titicaca and the snow-capped Andes. Back at the house, dinner is ready, and afterward your host helps you into traditional clothing for a folkloric music event in the community hall, where young islanders play live Andean music and visitors dance.

Day two starts on Amantani and ends on Taquile Island, where men do the knitting and women spin wool: a reversal of typical gender roles that your guide explains. A village chief demonstrates natural dyeing using vegetables. After lunch at a local restaurant, the hike back down to the pier takes you to the boat for the return to Puno, a journey of roughly two and a half hours covering 36 kilometres. Hotel drop-off in central Puno happens by 4:30 PM. The small group size means personalized attention throughout.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to sleep in a family home and spend time with islanders rather than return to Puno each night. The homestay is what makes the connection to local life possible. You eat meals cooked by your hosts, join their evening music event, and see how they live day to day. The two-day format fits all three islands into one trip without rushing, though basic facilities on Amantani mean it suits travelers comfortable with simple conditions.
