The experience

The Uros Floating Islands sit on Lake Titicaca a short boat ride from Puno. When you arrive, a guide walks you through the islands and explains how the communities built and maintain them. You'll see the animals and plants that live there, and get a sense of daily life on the islands, which have become a tourism hub but still function as home for the families who live there.

The totora raft ride is the main optional add-on: for 15 soles, you can take a traditional reed boat to another floating island, where you can buy water and snacks and take photos before heading back to the main boat. Whether you do the raft or stay on the islands for a walk, the tour wraps up with a return boat ride to Puno and drop-off at your hotel or the Plaza de Armas.

The whole outing runs about three hours from pickup to return. Infants can sit on an adult's lap, and the pace suits all fitness levels.
