The experience
Eleven hours starting from your hotel means an early pickup and a full day on the water and in the highlands. The motorized boat carries up to 28 passengers with bus-style seats, a bathroom, and panoramic windows, so the crossing to each site is comfortable rather than cramped. You'll spend the morning on the Uros Floating Islands, where the ground is woven entirely from totora reeds: locals will show you how they build and maintain the islands, invite you into their homes, and explain the techniques passed down for centuries. A traditional reed boat ride is optional if you want to paddle across the water yourself.
Taquile Island comes next, reached by boat across Lake Titicaca. The walk from the port to the main square takes 30 minutes uphill on a charming path, rewarding you with panoramic views of the lake and the island's terraced landscape. Lunch (fresh trout from the lake with quinoa soup) is included and eaten with those views. The island is known for its UNESCO-recognized textile art. Men, women, and children all weave, and each pattern and color carries meaning about daily life, beliefs, and community. You'll have time to walk around and see the work firsthand.
Sillustani, reached overland from Taquile, holds pre-Inca and Inca burial towers called chullpas set beside Lake Umayo. A 30-minute walk takes you through the site to the tallest tower, standing 10 meters high, where the views open across the lake and the surrounding Andean landscape. The chullpas reveal how ancient Andean people understood death and the afterlife, and the setting (the towers, the lake, the high plateau) makes that history tangible rather than abstract.
