The experience

Chucuito opens the route: a colonial town where the plaza holds a stone sundial and the church displays the arched stonework of its era. The Temple of Fertility, called Inka Uyu, sits here: a Lupaca architectural site marked by carved stone phalluses that predate the Inca and trace back to the Qhapaq culture. From there, the tour moves south to Molloco, where funerary towers (chullpas) stand in both square and circular forms, some built as underground chambers that rival the better-known towers at Sillustani.

Aramu Muro comes next, a 40-minute drive from Molloco over the road toward Bolivia. A massive rock face holds a doorway carved in low relief: known also as Wilca Uta or the Devil's Gate. Local legend says the pre-Inca god Aramu Muro vanished through this stone portal, taking a solar disc to protect it from Spanish conquest. The site draws fewer visitors than the earlier stops and carries a reputation among locals for spiritual energy and mystery. After this, the tour reaches Waru warus, the raised agricultural terraces, before arriving in Juli by early afternoon.

Juli, called the little Rome of America for its religious architecture, is where the group stops for lunch: optional for each passenger. The return to Puno begins around 4pm. The full day runs eight hours from pickup to drop-off at your hotel in the city center, with a professional guide leading the route in English or Spanish (other languages available at additional cost).
