The experience
The day starts with pickup from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle for the drive to Gatun Lake. Once there, you board a canoe and cross the lake and Chagres River to reach the Embera village. Gatun Lake itself is worth the journey. It's an artificial lake created in 1913 by the largest dam in the world at the time, now a crucial part of the Panama Canal system. The tree-lined shores and blue-green water frame the route to the village.
At the Embera village, a guide leads you through the settlement and explains how the indigenous community lives. You'll visit the craft market where villagers sell handmade goods, then watch a traditional dance performance. Lunch is a local meal of fried plantains with tilapia, served in the village. After eating, you have the choice to swim or hike to a hidden waterfall deeper in the rainforest: a spot locals favor for its seclusion and the natural pool at its base.
The tour is private, so the pace and stops are yours to shape. A live guide speaks English or Spanish. If you have dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free), the operator can arrange them ahead of time. Water shoes are recommended for the waterfall swim or hike. The return journey retraces the canoe route back across the lake to the vehicle, which takes you back to your hotel.
