The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your accommodation in downtown Panama City and a one-hour drive to Colón on the Atlantic side, where the conversation turns to the Canal's history. At the Visitors Center, you watch container ships move through the locks of the expansion—the massive structures that lift and lower vessels between the Atlantic and Pacific. The scale of the operation becomes real when you see a ship in the water, not in a photograph.

After the Visitors Center, you cross the third bridge that spans the Canal itself, then drive into San Lorenzo National Park, a rainforest reserve where the road passes through habitat. Monkeys, birds, and coatis move in the canopy and on the ground; the guide points them out as you travel. The fortress—Castillo San Lorenzo del Chagres—sits on a high reef at the mouth of the Chagres River, built in 1601 when it was the chief Atlantic port on the isthmus.
