The Experience

The first thing I remember is the green. Not just trees—layers of green, tangled and dripping, right outside the van window as we left Panama City behind. Our guide Marta waved her hand at the mist curling above the canopy and said something about howler monkeys being louder than car horns. She was right. A few minutes later, that sound—somewhere between a lion’s roar and a broken trumpet—echoed through the trees as we stepped onto the trail at the Rainforest Discovery Center. I tried to spot one but only caught flashes of tails in the leaves.

The walk wasn’t tough—just humid enough to stick my shirt to my back after ten minutes. Marta pointed out a tiny poison dart frog (blue as candy) hopping near our boots. She laughed when I nearly missed it because I was busy swatting at what turned out to be harmless butterflies. The air smelled like wet earth and something sweet, maybe wild ginger? We stopped at a lookout tower and I swear, for a second, it felt like floating above the world—birdsong everywhere, even though I could barely see anything except endless forest.

After that came Gatun Lake—a stretch of water so wide it looks like it shouldn’t belong in a jungle. We climbed into this little boat with peeling paint, and Marta handed out bottles of cold water like gold coins. The lake is part of the Panama Canal (I didn’t know that before), and you can see huge ships sliding past in the distance while you’re drifting toward these tiny islands full of monkeys. One capuchin jumped right onto our railings—Marta tossed him a piece of fruit and he stared at us like we were the exhibit.

Lunch was simple but perfect—rice with chicken, plantains fried just right, coffee strong enough to wake up even after all that walking. I still think about that view from the boat: clouds moving fast over Gatun Lake, jungle pressing in on every side. You know how sometimes you realize you’re somewhere you’ll never really forget? That’s what this felt like.
