The experience
The tour starts with a 7 a.m. pickup from your Panama City hotel and a drive across the Third Bridge to reach the Caribbean side of the canal. Your first stop is the Agua Clara Locks, where you watch enormous ships pass through the newest section of the Panama Canal: built to accommodate the larger Panamax vessels. You explore the visitor center and learn how engineers expanded the canal's capacity. From there, you head to the Gatun Locks Observation Deck for panoramic views of the canal in operation, watching the mechanical process unfold from above.
Around 10 a.m., the drive continues to Fort San Lorenzo, arriving at 11 a.m. The fort sits at the entrance of the Chagres River on a promontory overlooking the water, and much of the original structure remains intact: the moat, cannons, and vaulted chambers are all preserved. Built in the 17th and 18th centuries as part of Spain's defensive system for transatlantic trade, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. The strategic location commands views of the river and bay below, which explains why the Spanish chose this spot to settle.
At noon, you begin the return trip to Panama City, arriving at your hotel around 2 p.m. The tour includes a certified English-speaking guide and bottled water. Entrance fees to Fort San Lorenzo and the Agua Clara Locks are paid separately on the day.
