The Experience

"Did you see that tail?" our guide, David, whispered, pointing up into a tangle of green. I squinted—honestly, I was still catching my breath from the climb—but there it was: a sloth, moving so slowly it almost blended into the morning mist. The city noise faded away somewhere below us. You could hear birds calling out, and sometimes the weird creak of branches shifting. It’s strange how just a few minutes from downtown Panama City you can suddenly be in thick rainforest like this.

The walk started near the old Administration Building—David told us stories about Canal politics while we passed by these grand houses that looked straight out of another era. I’d read about Ancon Hill before (it pops up on every “day trip Machu Picchu Cusco” style list for Panama), but being here felt different. There was this earthy smell after last night’s rain, and little lizards darting across the path. We stopped every so often to peer through David’s spotting scope—he got genuinely excited when he found a toucan, which made all of us excited too. Even if you’re not a bird person, it’s hard not to get caught up in it.

At the top—199 meters up, apparently—I just stood there for a while trying to take it all in. The view is wild: glass towers on one side, ships queuing for the Canal on the other, jungle everywhere else. Someone pointed out Casco Viejo in the distance; I tried to spot our hotel but gave up pretty quick. The sun broke through for a second and everything went gold for a minute or two. It felt like we’d earned it somehow.

On the way down I nearly missed a Geoffrey’s tamarin monkey because I was distracted by some snacks David handed out (chips never taste as good as they do after hiking). We ended at Mi Pueblito—a sort of open-air museum with old Panamanian houses—which was honestly more interesting than I expected. There were people chatting in Spanish by the entrance and someone selling sweet coffee that smelled incredible; I wish I’d grabbed one for the ride back. Anyway, if you want something that feels both urban and wild at once—a real mix—this Ancon Hill walking tour is probably it. Still thinking about that sloth.
