The Experience
The BioMuseo itself is the draw: nine permanent exhibits move through video displays, geological samples, fossils, life-size reproductions of extinct animals, aquariums for both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and the living web of biodiversity that makes Panama the bridge between two continents. A bilingual guide walks you through the human footprint and the cultural history woven into the landscape. The museum was designed by Frank Gehry, and the building itself sits on the Amador Causeway, the strip of land that juts into the Pacific.
After the museum, the tour drives out along the Causeway to the closest islands for the best angle on the Panama City skyline. There's a photo stop at the big Panama sign, and time to stand where you can see both the city and the water. The whole outing runs about four hours from hotel pickup to drop-off, with the air-conditioned vehicle included. If you want to eat, the guide can arrange lunch at a local restaurant along the way, though you pay for it separately.
The guide is certified and speaks both English and Spanish, so the exhibits and the stories behind them come through clearly. Children from age five are welcome, and the museum is wheelchair accessible. The vehicle itself is also wheelchair accessible, and specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with small children.
