Step-by-step itinerary
Panama Canal and San Lorenzo Adventure
- Pick up at Panama City hotel
- Drive to Panama’s Caribbean Coast
- Cross Atlantic Bridge and view canal
- Explore San Lorenzo National Park and fortress
- Visit Shelter Bay Marina for lunch
- Observe ships at New Locks of Panama Canal
The experience
The day starts with pickup at your Panama City hotel. From there, the route heads north toward Colón and the Caribbean side of the canal. You'll cross the Atlantic Bridge, a cable-stayed span completed in 2019 that rises 75 meters above the waterway and lets you see both the Agua Clara Locks and the rainforest canopy in a single view. At the Agua Clara Visitor Center, you watch Neo-Panamax vessels (the massive modern ships the expanded canal was built to handle) navigate the locks while you stand on the observation platform.
San Lorenzo National Park is the historical anchor. A scenic drive winds through dense jungle where howler monkeys, sloths, and tropical birds live among the trees. At Fort San Lorenzo, you walk the ruins of a Spanish castle perched on a cliff above the Chagres River and the Caribbean Sea. The fortress dates to the 16th century and was built to guard trade routes from pirate raids. The Visitor Center inside explains the strategic role it played during Spanish colonial rule and later during the American military presence. The views from the ruins sweep across the water and back into the jungle.
Lunch happens at Shelter Bay Marina, a modern facility tucked into the same jungle setting near the canal's entrance. The marina's restaurant overlooks the water and serves as a natural pause point between the fortress and the New Locks, where you finish the day watching Gatun Lake and the canal's operations from a different vantage. An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group throughout, and bottled water is unlimited. The guide is a certified professional who speaks English or Spanish.
