The experience
The tour starts at the Mouth of the Chagres River, where El Castillo de San Lorenzo stands as the first strategic defense point. From there you drive through the national park toward Portobelo, passing views of the Panama Canal locks where you can watch megaships exit and enter: one of the few places on earth to see that transit. The route itself traces the path colonial traders took when moving gold and silver between the Atlantic and Pacific.
Portobelo Town is where the day opens up. You explore the two historical fortifications that once guarded the harbor, walk through the church, and visit the museum and custom house when they're open. The guide walks you through the raids and wars that scarred these sites (attacks by buccaneers, corsairs and privateers), and explains the role of the Cimarrons, enslaved people who escaped and fought back, reshaping the region's culture and freedom for generations to come. The Black Christ, a wooden statue housed in the church, carries its own layered history tied to the town's spiritual and cultural identity.
All admission fees, taxes and bottled water are included. The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide is certified. The full day runs 10 hours from pickup to return.
