The Experience

The tour starts at the Miraflores Visitor Center, where you stand at the edge of the Panama Canal and watch the locks operate in real time. Ships move through the chambers as your guide explains how the system works—the engineering that connects two oceans and changed global shipping forever. Then you settle into the IMAX theater for a 45-minute 3D film that walks through the canal's history and the mechanics behind what you just saw happen outside.

From there, you head to Gatun Lake for the wildlife portion. A boat carries you across the water through rainforest habitat where monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, toucans, iguanas and turtles live. Giant container ships pass through the same lake on their way through the canal—you'll see them moving across the water while you're watching for animals on the shoreline. The guide points out what moves in the trees and the water; the lake itself is the draw, not a series of stops.

Private transportation picks you up and brings you back, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. You'll need to pay the boat ride fee and the canal admission directly to the staff when you arrive—those aren't included in the tour price. The whole experience runs between four and five hours. Infants and small children can come along; specialized infant seats are available if you need one.
