Step-by-step itinerary

Embera culture and nature exploration

  • Arrive at Embera village
  • Watch traditional dances and music
  • Explore surrounding rainforest and wildlife
  • Learn about Embera food, culture, and lifestyle
  • Take pirogue ride through rainforest
  • Visit waterfall (if water level permits)
  • Enjoy traditional Embera lunch

The experience

Your guide picks you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and drives you to the Chagres River, where the real journey begins. A pirogue, a traditional wooden canoe, carries you through the rainforest on the water. The river itself is the route: you move through the trees, spotting birds and wildlife as you travel toward the village. The Embera have lived here for generations, and the village sits deep enough into the national park that the forest is the landscape you move through to reach it.

Once you arrive, the community greets you with traditional dances and music. Your guide translates and explains what you're watching: the stories behind the movements, the instruments, the significance of each performance. You then walk through the village and surrounding areas with your guide, who shows you how the Embera live: their food, their crafts, the way they use the forest. If the water level permits, you'll hike to a nearby waterfall and swim. Bring a swimsuit and towel if you want to go in the water.

Lunch is a traditional Embera meal of fresh fried fish and plantains, served in the village. A chicken option is available if you notify the operator when you book. The whole experience runs about seven hours from pickup to return, with the private guide speaking English or Spanish throughout, so you hear explanations as you move rather than walking in silence.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 12 years). Children under 6 can't be included in the booking.

What is the Embera village actually like when we arrive?

The Embera village sits within the Chagres National Park rainforest along the river. You'll see traditional homes, meet community members, and watch them perform dances and music as part of the welcome. The village is their home, not a museum: you're visiting a living community and learning how they actually live, work and eat.

Can we really swim at the waterfall, or does it depend on the season?

The waterfall swim depends on water level, when rainfall has been good, the waterfall is accessible and you can swim. If water levels are low, the waterfall may not be reachable that day. Bring a swimsuit and towel just in case, and your guide will let you know once you're on the river whether it's possible.

How much walking and physical activity is involved in this tour?

You'll walk through the village and surrounding forest areas with your guide, and if the waterfall is accessible, you'll hike to reach it. The tour is rated for travelers with at least moderate fitness. It's not recommended for people with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with poor cardiovascular health.

Is lunch included, and what if we have dietary restrictions?

Lunch is included and consists of fresh fried fish and plantains, a traditional Embera meal. A chicken option is available if you notify the operator at the time of booking. Bottled water is provided throughout the day.
