The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound of the dugout canoe scraping against the shore at Lake Alajuela—just this wooden hush and then a burst of laughter from one of the Emberá kids waving at us. It was humid but not heavy, with that green smell you only get deep in the rainforest. Our guide, Rosa, handed me a battered life jacket and grinned. She said something to the boatman in Spanish—he had these hands like he’d spent his whole life on water. I tried not to look nervous as we pushed off.

The river ride was quieter than I expected, except for birds and the occasional splash when someone dipped their fingers in. We stopped by a waterfall—icy cold water, shockingly clear—and I almost chickened out but ended up wading in up to my knees. My shorts were soaked for hours after that but honestly, it felt good.
