The experience

The day starts with pickup at your hotel around 8am, then a drive of about an hour to a boat ramp on Lake Alajuela, part of the Panama Canal watershed. The Emberá meet you there with a dugout canoe. The boat ride upriver takes roughly 45 minutes, and depending on water levels and conditions, you can stop at a waterfall along the way to swim. When you arrive at the village, the community welcomes you with music and a traditional greeting.

After time to wander on your own, a villager gives a short presentation on Emberá culture, traditions and the crafts they make. Lunch happens next, then you have the option to join a short jungle hike with one of the village elders to learn about medicinal plants. The rest of the afternoon is yours: walk around, buy crafts, get a temporary tattoo, or talk with the people who live there. Before heading back downriver, the villagers perform traditional shamanic and celebratory dances and music.

The return journey retraces the river and lake, and you're back in Panama City by late afternoon. A guide in your language travels with the group the whole way, and the boat ride itself includes live commentary. Because the group stays small, the village experience doesn't feel crowded, and the Emberá set the pace of what happens when.
