The experience

The tour starts with pickup at your hotel and a one-hour drive to Chagres National Park. Once there, you board a canoe and paddle the Chagres River, moving through the forest and its ecosystem. The guide, a member of the Embera community, navigates the water and points out the landscape as you travel.

A twenty-minute walk from the river leads to a hidden waterfall where you can swim in the water while the group rests. Back in the canoe, you continue downriver toward the village. When you arrive, the community greets you with music and traditional dances that are part of their culture. After the performance, you sit down to lunch: fried fish (the catch of the day), green fried plantains and fresh fruit, all prepared by villagers. You then have time to meet the craftspeople and artists who make traditional souvenirs by hand, or you can get a natural tattoo that lasts a couple of days. The return journey retraces the river by canoe, and the driver takes you back to your hotel.

Bottled water is provided throughout the day. The guide speaks English, Spanish or French depending on the group. Wear casual or sport clothes and be prepared for a moderate level of physical activity: the waterfall walk and canoe paddling require basic fitness, and infants must sit on an adult's lap.

Is this one for you?Eight hours is a full day commitment, which means you need to start early and won't have time for other activities in Panama City that same day. If you're in the city for just one afternoon, this tour won't fit. If you have a full day free, the length gives you time to swim at the waterfall, watch the dances, eat with the community and browse the village without rushing.
