The experience

The drive from Amman to Petra takes you along the Desert Road, with a photo stop five minutes before the Visitors Center where Mount Moses and the Petra Mountains come into view. Once at Petra, you walk through the site at your own pace. The driver does not accompany you beyond the entry gate, but offers commentary during the ride about what you'll see. The scale of the place hits differently when you're standing in front of it: rose-red cliffs carved into tombs, temples and a monastery that rise hundreds of feet above the canyon floor.

After Petra, the route continues to Wadi Rum, also called the Valley of the Moon. This is where you spend the night. The desert here opens up in every direction: rust-colored dunes, rock formations that seem to float, and a sky that darkens completely once the sun goes down. What you do in Wadi Rum is up to you: jeep tours, camel rides at sunset, sunrise watching, balloon rides, or simply stargazing are all possible, and the operator can help arrange any of these. The overnight itself is the draw: sleeping under clear desert sky instead of returning to a hotel in the city.

Day two starts early. Your driver picks you up from the Visitors Center at 7:00 AM and takes the scenic route back to Amman along the same desert road. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and Wi-Fi is available on board for both legs of the journey.
