The experience
The tour departs from Amman or Queen Alia Airport in an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional English-speaking driver. The three-hour drive south reaches Petra, where you walk the Siq, a long sandstone canyon, and explore the Rose-Red City's carved facades, Roman Theater and Royal Tombs. This UNESCO World Heritage site was hidden from the world until 1812, when a Swiss explorer disguised as an Arab scholar found it. It's now one of the New Seven Wonders.
After Petra, the route turns toward Wadi Rum, Jordan's largest desert and a UNESCO site shaped by Lawrence of Arabia's presence during the 1916 Arab Revolt. You arrive at a camp in the middle of the desert, where dinner is served. The next morning, a two to three-hour tour in local Bedouin-operated off-road vehicles covers the desert's highlights (rock formations, dunes and cultural sites) before the four-hour drive north to the Dead Sea.
The Dead Sea sits 408 meters below sea level, the lowest point on earth. Its water is so saline that floating is effortless. The mineral-rich mud along the shore is believed to have therapeutic benefits. You spend three to four hours at a resort beach enjoying the sun and water before returning to Amman. Breakfast is included on day two. Dinner on day one.
